How to prevent people from hot linking images off your website.

PART I

[PART I] [PART II]

Why prevent hot linking (direct linking) of your website images?

  •  it wastes your bandwidth!
  • it costs you money!
  • it rarely ever benefit your website!

It's basically useless to put up a notice that nicely says "please do not directly link images off our website".  Now days, there are hardly ever any visitors who will pity your hard work dedicated to the website and who will try not to link your images because they wish to save you bandwidth.  To web surfers, what matters the most is they convenience!  Hence, if you don't make it so they CAN NOT link the images off your site, you're vulnerable to losing tons of bandwidth to what we call "bandwidth thefts".

If your website hosts tons of images, definitely implement this code!

Simply put, in order to prevent people from directly linking your images, you want to give them a dead image when they directly link it.  When they don't achieve what they wanted to do by direct linking, they will stop.

In order to implement this code, your website has to run on a Apache server.  Most web hosts use Apache, since it's free and works the best.  But if you have doubts, ask your host providers.
